New Donjoy back support belts: why do we get back pain?

Back pain is the leading cause of disability before the age of 45. An estimated 80% of French people have or will have back pain at some point in their life.

Back pain is mostly located in the neck (cervical pain) and in the lower back (low back pain). The pain is primarily linked to muscle contracture.

Whatever its nature, pain is triggered when the capacities of the spine are exceeded. The more stress the spine has to withstand, the more prone a person is to back pain.

Serious causes involving bone lesions (nerve compression by a herniated disc) are fortunately the least common; most cases involve an intervertebral joint dysfunction with a strong muscular reaction.

In addition, certain repetitive movements, working positions or household gestures encourage the onset of low back pain.

After the pain-relief and muscle-relaxant medical treatment of the acute phase, lumbar rehabilitation includes, besides learning back-protecting postures and muscle strengthening, the use of lumbar support belts or corsets.
