Ankle sprains: when is an ankle brace needed, and how do you choose it?

The ankle sprain.

The ankle allows flexion-extension, eversion (foot outwards and upwards) and inversion (foot inwards and downwards) movements.

The classic ankle sprain occurs during a forced inversion movement.

The outer lateral ligaments and the peroneal muscles (on the outside of the lower leg) cannot hold the ankle.

The result is a stretch or even a partial or complete tear of the outer ligaments.

Swelling is often seen on the outer side, and possibly bruising in the event of a tear.

When should you wear an ankle brace?

The ankle must be supported immediately to allow healing; icing is a good vasoconstrictor and reduces post-injury inflammation as well as swelling and bruising.

Recovering good ankle stability is essential to avoid the development of osteoarthritis.

How do you choose an ankle brace?

There are three types of stabilising braces.

- The 2-shell brace with straps (MediRoyal)

- The 2-shell brace with hinged ankle (DJO)

- The ankle support brace with lateral stays, lined with figure-of-eight straps and a precise, constant BOA-type tightening system (MediRoyal).

Their role is to provide support and lateral stability to the ankle, allowing walking (flexion-extension) while preventing the inversion movement.

The BOA ankle brace provides adjusted support thanks to its effective tightening system, right up to the return to sport.
